In 1992 a shipping crate - carrying 28,000 rubber duckies - was lost at sea. Like that damn heart necklace from Titanic! Cue the Celine Dion!
Almost 20 years later, they are still spotted all over the water scape and they even wash up on shore every now and then.
As the good little oceanographers we are, we turned the mishap into an informational boon and have used the bloopdebloop to determine currents and affects of plastic pollution in our waters. The above map shows where they have traveled to and when. 2000 of them are still out there.
